Why is Lauren being referred to as “Hermana Scott”?
Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints typically refer to one another by the titles of “Brother” and “Sister.” Male missionaries are addressed as “Elder,” and female missionaries as “Sister.” Because Lauren will be serving in a Spanish-speaking country, she will be addressed as “Hermana,” which is Spanish for “Sister".
How long will Hermana Scott be gone?
Sister Scott is expected to serve for a period of 18 months. She will enter the Mexico Missionary Training Center on September 11th, 2013 and is expected to return home in March 2015.
Did Hermana Scott choose specifically to go to Ecuador?
Full-time Mormon missionaries are assigned to particular locations by the leadership of the LDS Church. They do not get to personally select where they will serve.
Is serving a mission a requirement for members of the LDS Church (Mormons)?
No, serving a mission is not required. Individuals make the voluntary decision to serve and share the gospel with others.
